“You heard it! Our baby can hear us!” It’s what every parent hope to say to their children with hearing loss.
It also happened during the shooting scene for the guidebook Open the World of Sounds for Hearing with Loss – 30 Lessons for Parents, parents demonstrated how they practice “detection” with their children with hearing loss. When children with hearing loss respond to sounds, we call it the “sounds detection.” It might seem as a simple respond, it is actually an important starting point for children with hearing loss.
CHF is devoted to providing comprehensive auditory-verbal training for children with hearing loss, to develop crucial speech and language abilities before age 6 so they may leave the world of silence. In order to accomplish the goal, CHF published a guidebook for parents to study and implement in in daily basis.
AV specialists, audiologists and researchers of CHF had gathered and worked hard to make this guidebook practical.
Q: From planning, writing, shooting, editing to publishing, how long did it take? What is the hardest part?
It took more than two years to finish the guidebook. However, what made this guidebook a brilliant piece is that it has conducted more than 20 years of experiences and knowledge of each team member of CHF. “Now or never.” It motivated us to start the guidebook.
The hardest part was for every team member to spend extra time work on this guidebook or all gather for meetings, because we have routine works to do.
Q:CHF has published many other guidebooks before, what made this one outstanding?
CHF has been doing researches and develop teaching materials, however, we used to focus on certain theme, for example, the guidebook Holding Hands and Reading – Picture Book is designed to promote parent-child reading. The guidebook Speak Naturally – Guiding Children with Hearing Loss to Speak is designed for parents to train their children to speak through a variety of day-to-day scenarios. Open the World of Sounds for Hearing with Loss – 30 Lessons for Parents is designed for parents who started from ground zero, the guidebook provides encyclopaedical knowledge.
Additionally, for parents to have a complete understating of this guidebook, CHF invited several children with hearing loss and their families to film videos to demonstrate how to train their children following the instructions from the guidebook, our AV specialists also provide explanation for each instruction.
Q:What is the ultimate purpose of this guidebook?
As mentioned, the reason that CHF has been providing one-to-one AV services, long distance tele-practice AV services and AV services for remote area is to serve more children with hearing loss and their families. Same reason to publish the book, we hope children with hearing loss can learn without any restrictions of time or space.
Leave the World of Silence
The key for children with hearing loss to leave the world of silence is the parents. As Open the World of Sounds for Hearing with Loss – 30 Lessons for Parents provides encyclopaedical knowledge, CHF will continue providing services and helping every child with hearing loss and their family. |
